| JEEP QUADRA T-CASE Quadra Trac Grand Cherokee also includes the Quadra-Trac II® on-demand 4WD system standard on Limited and V8 equipped models. Quadra-Trac II® is an on- demand 4WD system utilizing a gerotor coupling in the transfer case. In normal situations, Quadra-Trac II® sends virtually all power to the rear axle and wheels. When rough or slippery terrain is encountered, Quadra-Trac II® automatically distributes torque as needed to the front driveshaft to help maintain control. No driver shifting is required in high range. It includes a low range that more than doubles the transfer case gear ratio for greater control in severe low-speed, low-traction situations, as well as a neutral position for use if Grand Cherokee is being towed behind a motor home. Quadra-DriveQuadra-DriveTM eliminates the "compromise between on- and off-road performance, as well as juggling the tradeoffs of full- and part-time systems. It even eliminates the need to know how to use them." That's because Quadra-Drive's response is instantaneous when any wheel slips. Torque is transferred - progressively, silently and smoothly - to the wheel or wheels with the most grip, and on your journey goes. Quadra-Drive has three gerotor couplings - one in the Quadra-Trac IITM transfer case and one in each Vari-LokTM progressive axle – each use a gerotor pump, piston and clutch pack to transfer torque to the wheel or wheels with the most grip. This completely mechanical system allows Grand Cherokee to continue under driver control even if only one wheel has traction. In normal driving, engine torque is sent through the transfer case to the rear axle and wheels. The moment a rear wheel slips, Quadra-Drive can respond in a number of ways. For instance, the rear axle gerotor coupling can transfer torque to the other rear wheel. If no traction is available, the transfer case gerotor coupling can send torque to the front axle. There, the gerotor coupling can transfer nearly 100 percent of the developed engine torque to just one front wheel, if necessary, to maintain traction. Since drive torque is available to all four wheels, optimum traction and handling is assured.
